Treating Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is a common term for a cancerous (malignant) tumor that starts in the colon or the rectum. These cancers can also be named colon cancer or rectal cancer, depending on where they start. Colon cancer and rectal cancer are often combined because they have many common features. Treatment options for colorectal cancer depend on many factors, including the type and stage of the disease, but you can expect a combination of these types of treatments:

Local treatments

Local treatments refer to treatment that treats the tumor without affecting the rest of the body. Common local treatments of colorectal cancer are surgery to remove the tumor and radiation therapy. Depending on the type of colorectal cancer and how advanced it is, you might need other types of treatment as well, either before or after surgery, or sometimes both.

Systemic treatments

Systemic reach cancer cells almost anywhere in the body. They can be given by mouth or put directly into the bloodstream. Depending on the type of colorectal cancer, different types of treatment might be used, including:

  • Chemotherapy for Colorectal Cancer
  • Targeted therapy for Colorectal Cancer
  • Immunotherapy for Colorectal Cancer
