Types of Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is broken into two main categories: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and small cell (SCLC). Each type of lung cancer has different treatment options and prognosis.

Treating Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer makes up 80%-85% of those with lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer is an umbrella term for several types of lung cancers that behave in a similar way. Non-small cell lung cancers include squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. Treatment options for non-small cell lung cancer depend on many factors, including the type and stage of the disease, but you can expect a combination of these types of treatments:

Local treatments

Local treatments refer to treatment that treats the tumor without affecting the rest of the body. Common local treatments of non-small cell cancer are surgery to remove the tumor and radiation therapy. Depending on the type of non-small cell cancer and how advanced it is, you might need other types of treatment as well, either before or after surgery, or sometimes both.

Systemic treatments

Systemic reach cancer cells almost anywhere in the body. They can be given by mouth or put directly into the bloodstream. Depending on the type of non-small cell cancer, different types of treatment might be used, including:

  • Chemotherapy for Non-Small Cell Cancer
  • Radiofrequency Ablation Therapy for Non-Small Cell Cancer
  • Targeted Therapy for Non-Small Cell Cancer
  • Radiation Therapy for Non-Small Lung Cancer
  • Immunotherapy for Non-Small Cell Cancer
