Doctor at tri cities cancer center showing patient the results of a cancer screening

By: Chuck DeGooyer, CEO, Tri-Cities Cancer Center

If there is one single message that your Tri-Cities Cancer Center would like to share with people in our region during this time it is – Don’t delay your cancer screenings!

This year has certainly been one for the books! Early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a call to postpone non-essential procedures at doctor’s offices or hospitals. In addition, there were fears of COVID-19 exposure at these facilities for those visiting loved ones. Even as things have progressed this year, it is clear that there will continue to be fluctuations in infection rates for the foreseeable future.

However, with strict safety measures being taken by medical facilities, patients should be confident in safely receiving the appropriate care they need. Far too often, individuals have been postponing screenings that are critical to the early detection of cancer that can lead to more positive treatment outcomes.

According to Dr. Ned Sharpless, MD, Director of the National Cancer Institute, “Ignoring life-threatening non-COVID-19 conditions such as cancer for too long may turn one public health crisis into many others. Let’s avoid that outcome.”

As we continue to wash our hands, social distance, take temperatures, and wear masks to ensure everyone’s safety, we highly encourage everyone that has been postponing going to the doctor to reach out to their doctor’s office. It’s time to schedule your regular mammograms, colonoscopies, prostate exams, or skin screenings – especially if you have concerns! Please don’t delay getting the care you need. Skipping or delaying these important cancer screenings can put your health at great risk.
